Do I need an referral?
Wisconsin is a direct access state. By law you do not need a referral to get PT services - you can come through direct access. However, some insurances have restrictions - all Medicaid, VA Services, and TRICARE patients require a referral per their plans. Medicare requires an MD to sign off on the PT plan of care and many doctors won't sign the PT plan if they didn't see you first - so best to get the referral there. Most commercial plans (BCBS, UHC, Aetna, UMR, etc.) do not have restrictions on direct access to PT services, but it's always best to know your plan and check your insurance.
